Volunteer: StrongPeople Leader 2026
PURPOSE: To provide information and educational programs on physical activity, strength training, balance, and healthy aging to the general public using research-based and unbiased information. To improve the health and well-being of the aging population.
OPPORTUNITY DESCRIPTION:Become certified as a StrongPeople® volunteer leader after completing the required training, completing CPR certification, and working with another certified volunteer leader.Participate in volunteer meetings and educational offerings throughout the year (4 per year).Trained physical activity volunteer leaders agree to facilitate or support 2 sessions of an approved group per week throughout the year. Duties include setting up chairs and mats, moving and adjusting weights, providing instruction, assisting with and correcting form, and providing motivation and research-based information about the OSU StrongPeople Programs.Volunteer leaders cooperate with and assist the local county Extension Educators and community partners, and work as team members with other volunteers to plan and conduct physical activity programs in the county.Responsibilities may vary slightly with the current needs of the community, the program, and the skills of individual volunteers. They may include, but are not limited to:Assisting with or providing instruction at community physical activity group classes and events.Maintaining and reporting appropriate records (e.g., participation records, emergency information, accident and incident reports, and volunteer hours). QUALIFICATIONS FOR NEW VOLUNTEERS:• Regularly engage in physical activity – walking, lifting weights/strength training, and/or balance activities in either an existing Extension program or other approved program. • Available to participate in all training sessions and updates necessary for the OSU StrongPeople volunteer leader certification. • Available and willing to give required volunteer service (2 hours/week) to OSU StrongPeople program(s). • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with others while working with participants or leading programs face-to-face or via Zoom. • Willingness to ask questions of OSU Educators and acknowledge limitations when working with the public. • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity and to ensuring equal opportunity for those wishing to benefit from the OSU Physical Activity programs and services. • Willingness to partner with OSU Extension Service staff in providing the public with approved, up-to-date, research-based, safe, healthy living information. • Commitment to follow and communicate OSU Extension Service program safety guidelines provided in the applicable OSU trainings and meetings.

Appropriate use of the title “StrongPeople Leader/Volunteer”I understand that: A. The volunteer leader title (nametags, clothing, signage, and materials) is to be used only in conjunction with activities sponsored or pre-approved by Oregon State University Extension program staff. B. Volunteers may use the title and resources of the OSU Extension StrongPeople Program only when engaged in unpaid public service in an OSU-sponsored and pre-approved program. C. While in the role of volunteer OSU Extension StrongPeople Program, volunteers will not appear as part of commercial activities, endorse commercial products, or imply endorsement of any products, business, or organization. D. Volunteers may include their certification as an OSU Extension StrongPeople Program volunteer on a resume or job application. Workplace Violence ProhibitedThe safety and well-being of OSU Extension employees, clients, volunteers, students, and visitors is of utmost importance. Threatening behavior, both verbal and physical, and acts of violence at OSU Extension offices, at OSU Extension events, or by electronic means, will not be tolerated. Any person who engages in this behavior may be removed from the premises and may be dismissed from the OSU Extension StrongPeople Program. If you experience workplace violence while serving as an Extension StrongPeople Volunteer, please communicate with your Extension supervisor as quickly as possible so the matter can be addressed.
